Exam Registration Procedures

The Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry establishes specific testing and licensing requirements, test dates, registration deadlines, locations and fees. Requirements, test dates and locations are subject to change.

Beginning Jan. 2, 2013, the prelicensing exam will be administered by DLI. There are no prerequisite experience or educational requirements to take the residential building contractor or remodeler exam. You can apply online or submit an application to CCLD (PDF) along with the required $50 exam application fee. The exam is offered at DLI’s offices in St. Paul as well as sites in Duluth, St. Cloud, Detroit Lakes, Granite Falls and Owatonna.

When should I schedule my exam?

While the test appointments may be made as little as three business days prior to an exam, your chances of getting the date and location of your choice increase the further in advance you register.

When should I take my exam?

We encourage students to test within 5 days of completing their classroom training. Additionally, students should give themselves ample time to review classroom materials and complete related assignments. Under ideal circumstances, a student will test 2 to 3 days after they have completed their classroom training.

*There is no education or training prerequisite to schedule a Minnesota Residential Contractor Exam.

What is the format of the exam?

The exam is multiple-choice and contains 110 questions which are broken up into two 55 question sections. The first section covers the business and law portion and the second section covers the residential contractor portion. 5 questions are not scored or graded.

What score is needed to pass the exam?

You must answer 35 questions correctly in each section for an overall score of 70 percent to pass the MN Residential Contractor Exam.

What should I bring with me to the exam?

Two forms of identification (one of which must be a driver's license, state issued ID card, or military ID)
The confirmation number provided when the test reservation was made

While the Contractor Trade portion of the exam is open-book, you will not be allowed to bring your own copy of the IRC book into the exam with you. However, you will be provided with a copy of the book at the testing center. We will provide you with a copy of the IRC book to reference during the 2-day course and show you how to use it for best results on the exam.

What is not allowed in the exam?

Scratch paper, an erasable tablet is provided
Note taking of any kind
Talking or smoking
Electronic devices, including beepers, pagers, alarm watches, cellular phones, personal radios/tape players must be turned off during the exam
Proctors will not answer questions concerning exam content
